Why Do Some People Drain Your Energy? 6 Common Reasons

Quick Answer

Some people leave you feeling energized, while others leave you feeling completely drained. That isn't your imagination. In my experience, there are several reasons this happens. Once you understand why certain people affect you differently, it becomes much easier to protect your energy, set healthy boundaries, and feel more like yourself again.

Have You Ever Wondered Why Some People Drain You?

Have you ever noticed that some people feel wonderful to be around, and then there are others at work, in your neighborhood, or even in your family who leave you feeling completely drained? Why is that?

Here are six common reasons some people drain your energy and others do not.

1. Energetic Imbalance

Some people simply do not generate the same level of light that you do, and they pull from yours instead. They may carry heavy energy themselves, or spend time around heavy, draining people. As a result, being around them can feel dense, tiring, and depleting.

2. Emotional Dumping

Some people vent constantly and do not realize how draining it is. They are not looking for resolution. They are looking for company in their misery. They can come at you like a tsunami of negativity, and after a while, it wears you down.

3. Lack of Energy Boundaries

Some people are not aware of their own space. Their body language can feel loud, bold, intrusive, or overpowering. They do not realize the energy they create around them. Your response may be to shrink yourself in their presence, and that is depleting. When you shrink, they take up more space and you give away your power in the process.

I teach more about this in my online training, How to Set Healthy Boundaries with Others, and in my book, Eliminate Bottom Feeders: How to Attract Extraordinary People.

4. Fear-Based People

These are the people who live in worst-case-scenario mode. The world is ending. Everything is a crisis. They try to pull you into a fearful state with them.

Yes, it is wise to stay aware and be prepared. But living in a constant state of fear does nothing to increase joy, peace, or healing in this world. It absolutely drains your energy.

5. Energetic Compatibility

There are simply some people you feel almost allergic to.

Some people help us grow, inspire us, and bring valuable insight into our lives. Others may feel flat, dull, unappealing, or like a complete non-event. There may simply be nothing there for you.

If you feel a strong repelling feeling for no obvious reason, it may be that they carry habits, values, or ways of living that do not align with your own. Maybe they believe very differently than you do.

Trust yourself. You do not need to like everyone. I do hope you remain civil and kind, but you are not required to feel connected to every person you meet.

6. People Who Compete With You

This can be very common with siblings, but it also happens at work, in neighborhoods, in families, and in social groups.

If someone is competing with you, it is actually a compliment. On some level, they see something in you.

If you can, disengage and become a detached witness. Find a calm place within yourself. It is no fun to compete with someone who refuses to compete back.

Not all of us naturally know how to hold space for another person's emotions without absorbing them. Some people can listen to someone vent and walk away feeling completely fine. Others carry that person's emotions and frequency with them for hours or even days.

This is one of the reasons I teach Reiki, energy protection, and energy hygiene. Learning how to protect your energy doesn't mean you stop caring about people. It means you can listen with compassion, support someone, and still leave the conversation feeling like yourself.

I hope this gives you some insight into why certain people affect you the way they do. When you understand what is happening, it becomes much easier to set boundaries, protect your energy, and feel better.
