Have you ever experienced a sudden headache, nausea, emotional heaviness, irritability, or a wave of anxiety that seemed to come out of nowhere? In my experience, not every emotion or physical sensation begins with us. Sometimes we are responding to energy around us. Learning good Energy Hygiene can help you recognize what is yours, what isn't, and what to do about it.
Have you ever felt a sudden stabbing pain in your head, nausea, heaviness, irritability, or emotional intensity that seemed to come out of nowhere?
What if it wasn't random?
Over the years, I have come to believe that many of these experiences have an energetic component. If someone is intensely angry with you, thinking about you repeatedly, or energetically connected through cords, you may become aware of it.
I don't believe there are many insignificant thoughts or feelings. Energy has direction, and intentions matter.
Years ago, I had a misunderstanding with a colleague who was a Reiki Master student. She was very angry with me.
Around that same time, I had just met my husband.
One night, he messaged me around 12:30 a.m. his time and told me he had awakened feeling unusually angry and full of rage.
I immediately suggested he cut the cords.
The moment he did, I felt what seemed like a punch in my stomach.
Instantly, his anger disappeared.
That experience taught me something profound.
My own Energy Hygiene was affecting him immediately, even from a distance. It also showed me how powerful energetic connections can be.
Since then, I have paid much closer attention to seemingly random thoughts and emotions.
If you suddenly find yourself thinking about someone, there may be a reason.
If someone is emotionally focused on you, you may notice it.
One concept I teach is that there are both supportive and destructive energetic influences in the world.
Anger naturally attracts more anger.
When someone becomes consumed by resentment, that energy can sometimes be experienced as heaviness, fatigue, body aches, emotional intensity, irritability, or a feeling that something simply isn't right.
If we immediately respond with anger ourselves, we can unintentionally keep that energetic exchange alive.
This is one reason I believe forgiveness and Energy Hygiene are so important.
Intentions carry force.
As Reiki practitioners especially, our thoughts matter.
The energy we send into the world has consequences.
Years ago, I appeared on a podcast that reached an audience very different from the one I normally serve.
That night, I became violently ill.
As I asked during meditation what was happening, I repeatedly heard one word:
"Podcast."
The following day I contacted the host and asked whether she had been upset with me.
She admitted she was furious because the interview hadn't gone the way she had hoped.
Did she intentionally try to harm me?
No.
But strong emotional energy can still have an effect.
Interestingly, I also received an email from one listener thanking me for encouraging healthy boundaries because it gave her the courage to make an important change in her own life.
Even during difficult situations, the people who are meant to receive the message often still do.
I've also noticed that many people assume every emotion they experience belongs entirely to them.
Sometimes it does.
Sometimes it doesn't.
You may be picking up on tension within your family.
You may notice the emotional atmosphere at work.
You may feel the collective stress surrounding a major world event.
Or you may simply be connected to someone who is struggling.
Learning to recognize those differences can be incredibly empowering.
If you wake up feeling peaceful...
Perhaps the people connected to you are resting too.
If you suddenly awaken feeling angry, anxious, or emotionally overwhelmed...
It may be worth asking yourself whether you're carrying something that isn't yours.
The good news is that you don't have to remain there.
Whenever I experience something that feels energetically unusual, I immediately practice Energy Hygiene.
I channel Reiki.
I Bubble Up.
I cut energetic cords.
I clear my energy.
Then I pay attention.
Very often, what didn't belong to me disappears.
You don't have to absorb everything you feel.
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is recognize that it isn't yours to carry. 🩷
Common Questions
What is a psychic attack?
I use this term to describe situations where another person's intense thoughts, emotions, or intentions appear to affect someone energetically. In my experience, many people become more aware of these energetic interactions as they develop their intuitive abilities.
How can I protect myself?
My first recommendation is always Energy Hygiene. Channel Reiki, Bubble Up, cut your cords, and clear your energy. Those four practices are the foundation of the Energy Hygiene system I teach and use every day.
How do I know if the feeling is mine?
Ask yourself whether the emotion matches what was happening in your own life just moments before it appeared. If a feeling seems unusually sudden or out of character, Energy Hygiene can help you determine whether it belongs to you or whether you're simply becoming aware of energy around you.
Can thoughts really affect other people?
I believe intentions matter. This is one reason I encourage Reiki practitioners to practice with compassion, forgiveness, and integrity. The energy we cultivate within ourselves influences both our own lives and the people around us.
If you'd like to learn how to protect your energy, recognize what belongs to you, and strengthen healthy energetic boundaries, The Mohr Method of Healing® Reiki Training System teaches Energy Hygiene, Reiki, Bubble Up, cord cutting, and intuitive development step by step.
