Quick Answer: If you see swirling colors when your eyes are closed during Reiki, meditation, massage, or another deeply relaxed state, I believe you may be seeing energy. Very often, I believe these colors are connected with your spirit guides, your chakras, or intuitive information coming through your own unique psychic language. You may see colors shifting from one hue to another, becoming incredibly vivid, or appearing exactly when a particular energy center needs attention. Your job is not to force the experience—it is to begin noticing what the colors mean for you.

Do You See Colors When Your Eyes Are Closed?
I recently had a student ask me this during one of my live Q&As:
What does it mean when I close my eyes and see colors?
This is such a wonderful question.
You might experience this during Reiki.
During a massage.
While meditating.
Or simply when you're very relaxed.
Everybody has different intuitive abilities.
Some people naturally see energy.
But even people who don't consider visual intuition one of their primary skills can often see ethereal colors or distortions when their eyes are closed.

What Do These Colors Look Like?
If you've experienced this, you may know exactly what I'm talking about.
You might see something swirling.
It may oscillate between two colors.
Green and blue.
Green and purple.
Yellow and blue.
Yellow and purple.
It can almost look like one blob of color moving into another blob of color and then back again.
And very often, there's a feeling that comes with it.
Calm.
Peace.
Deep relaxation.

I Often Believe You Are Seeing Your Spirit Guides
Most of the time, when somebody describes this experience to me, I believe they are sensing one of their spirit guides.
I think of them almost like little energy helpers who are very close to you.
Sometimes you may even physically feel their presence.
You might feel pressure on your face.
Pressure somewhere on your body.
A sensation.
And then suddenly the colors begin.
For me, those experiences can be another way that your spirit team is communicating with you.

Colors Can Also Guide a Reiki Treatment
Sometimes you may be doing Reiki and suddenly begin seeing a particular color.
That color may guide you toward where the person needs energy.
Each chakra traditionally has a color associated with it.
Root Chakra — Red
Sacral Chakra — Orange
Solar Plexus Chakra — Yellow
Heart Chakra — Green or Pink
Throat Chakra — Blue
Third Eye Chakra — Indigo Blue
Crown Chakra — Violet
So if you're doing Reiki and suddenly begin seeing a very strong color, pay attention.
It may be information.

These Colors Don't Look Like Normal Earth Colors
This is one of the most interesting parts.
If you've actually seen these colors, you know what I'm talking about.
They don't look like the colors we normally see here on Earth.
They have every shade and hue imaginable.
They seem alive.
They have a vibrancy that ordinary colors don't have.
Sometimes they're pale at first.
Then suddenly they become incredibly vivid.
You might see a red that is so vibrant that it is absolutely captivating.
It's almost hypnotic.
And I know this is going to sound strange, but sometimes the colors are so rich and extraordinary that it's almost like you want to eat them.
I know that doesn't make sense.
But if you've seen them, you understand exactly what I'm talking about.

Spirit Guides May Be Collaborating During Reiki
I believe that even when these colors appear during a Reiki treatment, spirit guides may be part of what is happening.
Your guide may be assisting.
The recipient's guide may be assisting.
I believe spirit guides collaborate with each other.
They may be giving both people insights.
They may be helping guide the energy.
They may also be contributing to that extraordinary feeling of calm.

I've Had Reiki Clients See Colors for the First Time in Their Lives
I've performed Reiki on many people who suddenly began seeing colors during the treatment.
And very often, they tell me:
“I've never seen anything like this before.”
I love that.
Because this is exactly what I mean when I say I like my intuitive work to be evidence-based.
I couldn't force that experience.
I couldn't make somebody see vivid colors.
There's something happening within their own energy.
Their nervous system has relaxed.
Their third eye may be opening.
And suddenly they're seeing something they've never experienced before.
That is evidence.

The Color Itself May Have Meaning
I like to take it one step further.
If you're seeing a particular color repeatedly, there may be meaning behind that.
I have a student who sees a lot of red.
She's beautiful.
She's retired.
She's financially comfortable.
She's been extremely intuitive and spiritual throughout her life.
And she sees vivid, vivid red.
I have another student who also sees red.
Completely different person.
Different stage of life.
Probably about 40 years apart in age.
And yet red is a major color for both of them.
Interestingly, family is extremely important to both.
Security is important.
Finances are important.
Those are all very strong root chakra themes.

What Does Red Mean in Reiki?
The root chakra relates to our basic needs.
Our home.
Our clothing.
Food.
Family.
Security.
Our physical connection with the Earth.
We also often see very red energy around children and younger people before their energy begins changing as they develop.
So if you're performing Reiki on someone and suddenly begin seeing red, perhaps their root chakra needs Reiki.
That is something I would pay attention to.

Watch What Happens When You Move Your Hands
This is where Reiki can become really interesting.
I often hover my hands when I perform Reiki.
I used touch frequently when I was a massage therapist, but with Reiki I have found hovering incredibly powerful.
And of course, with Remote Healing I'm not physically touching the person at all.
Imagine you're hovering over someone's root chakra.
They can't see where your hands are.
They suddenly tell you:
“I'm seeing red.”
Then you move your hands up to their solar plexus.
And without knowing that you moved...
They say:
“Now I'm seeing yellow.”
That's fantastic evidence.
You can't force that.
You can't make it up.
They couldn't know where your hands were.
You weren't telling them what to see.

You May Be Naturally Visually Intuitive
If you're seeing colors frequently, I would say there's a good possibility that you are naturally visually gifted.
This is another way that your intuition and your spirit guides may communicate with you.
But here's the important part:
Your job is to figure out what the colors mean for you.
There is not one textbook meaning that will perfectly explain every intuitive experience.
Every individual has a different psychic language.
I've never met two students who communicate intuitively in exactly the same way.

Stop Comparing Your Intuition to Everybody Else's
This is incredibly important.
Don't look at somebody else's psychic ability and think:
Why can't I do that?
Maybe they see.
Maybe you know.
Maybe they dream.
Maybe you feel.
Maybe they hear words.
Maybe you receive physical sensations.
The universe may ultimately communicate the same information to both of you.
But the language it uses with you may be completely different.
That is your psychic filter.
That is your intuitive language.
Learn yours.

Seeing Energy Is Wonderful—but Knowingness Is Incredible Too
I will tell you that in my community, seeing energy is probably one of the most coveted intuitive abilities.
So many students want to see.
They want colors.
They want visions.
They want visual evidence.
And if you can see energy, that's wonderful.
But I will also tell you that of all the psychic abilities you can develop, I believe knowingness may be the most straightforward.
You can see red and think:
What does that mean?
Or you can simply know:
This person needs Reiki in their root chakra right now.
Both are wonderful abilities.
Both are accurate.
But knowingness can sometimes cut right through the mystery.

Your Intuition May Speak Through Color in Everyday Life Too
Maybe you see purple while you're thinking about leaving for work.
What does purple mean?
That may take some interpretation.
But perhaps simultaneously you have a strong knowingness:
Wait ten minutes before leaving. There's going to be a gap in traffic.
That's much more direct.
This is why I want you to work with all of your intuitive abilities rather than chasing one particular skill.
Use the colors.
Use the feelings.
Use your knowingness.
Use the physical sensations.
Pay attention to all of it.

If You're Seeing Colors, Celebrate It
If you're beginning to see colors, I think that's wonderful.
You're beginning to develop another part of your intuitive ability.
Don't force it.
Don't obsess over it.
Notice it.
Track it.
Ask what was happening when the color appeared.
Ask where your hands were during Reiki.
Ask what you were thinking about.
Ask how your body felt.
Ask what happened afterward.
Collect evidence.
That's how you begin learning your own language.

What If Your Psychic Abilities Feel Too Strong?
Sometimes intuitive abilities become uncomfortable because they feel like they're suddenly turned up too high.
If that's happening, I have a meditation called the Psychic Dial.
I teach you how to imagine adjusting your intuitive sensitivity almost like turning a dial.
Turn it down when you need a break.
Turn it up when you want to practice.
The goal is not to become overwhelmed by intuition.
The goal is to develop a relationship with it.
