Can a Loved One or Pet Become One of Your Spirit Guides?

Quick Answer: Yes. In my experience and spiritual teachings, loved ones and animals who have passed can remain connected to us and may become part of what I call our spirit team. You may sense them through dreams, sudden thoughts, familiar feelings, intuitive impressions, or the unmistakable sense that they are nearby. They have not necessarily left your life—they may simply be interacting with you in a different form.

What Does It Mean to Become a Spirit Guide?

I teach a lot about animal communication, soul communication, remote intuitive work, and developing psychic abilities.

One thing I have witnessed again and again is that deceased family members and beloved animals often appear during intuitive work.

Sometimes it is a grandparent.

Sometimes it is a parent.

Sometimes it is a dog, cat, or another animal that played an important role in someone's life.

When I say that a loved one becomes part of your spirit team, I mean that their presence may continue to support you, nudge you, comfort you, or offer intuitive insights as you move through your life.

They become another loving presence helping you navigate your soul's journey.

You May Already Be Sensing Them

Have you ever suddenly thought about someone who passed away for no obvious reason?

Maybe you dreamed about them.

Maybe you felt their presence.

Maybe a memory came into your mind so strongly that it seemed to come out of nowhere.

Or perhaps you simply had the feeling:

Grandma is here.

I believe those experiences are worth paying attention to.

Throughout my work, I have received impressions about deceased loved ones without knowing anything about the person's family beforehand.

I have picked up details about someone's father, grandfather, cultural background, military service, and other pieces of information that were later recognized by the person receiving the reading or healing.

Those experiences have been incredibly validating—not only for the person receiving them, but for me as well.

Animals Can Remain Connected to Us Too

Some of my most memorable experiences have involved animals.

Years ago, I gave Reiki to a woman who had cared for more than 100 animals throughout her lifetime.

She hadn't told me that.

During the session, I began sensing animal after animal coming forward.

Dogs.

Cats.

Birds.

Prairie dogs.

Snakes.

And other animals she had loved throughout her life.

It was one of the most powerful animal-related experiences I have ever had.

────────

Have You Ever Felt a Pet After They Passed?

I hear stories like this all the time.

Someone's beloved pet passes away, and afterward they:

Feel the animal jump onto the bed.

Sense them lying beside them.

See something move in their peripheral vision.

Dream about them vividly.

Suddenly think about them and feel their presence.

I experienced this myself after one of my dogs died.

One of his habits was resting his chin on our knee.

Within days of his passing, I distinctly felt the familiar weight of his chin on my knee again.

It was an extraordinary experience.

I have also experienced one of my cats becoming a very strong presence in my own intuitive field after she passed.

The loss was incredibly painful, which made that continued connection especially meaningful to me.

────────

Grief Can Make Spirit Communication Harder to Recognize

When you have recently lost someone you deeply love, you naturally want to feel them again.

But intense grief can sometimes make subtle intuitive information harder to recognize.

You are missing their physical presence.

You want them back in the form you remember.

That longing can become so loud that it becomes difficult to notice the quieter intuitive impressions underneath it.

As some peace begins to return, you may become more aware of things such as:

Dreaming about them.

Seeing them briefly in your mind's eye.

Thinking about them unexpectedly.

Feeling their familiar presence.

Sensing that they are near you.

This doesn't mean you need to stop grieving or rush yourself through grief.

It simply means that your intuitive awareness may become clearer as the emotional intensity begins to soften.

────────

Your Spirit Team May Show Up at Different Times

I don't believe every guide needs to be around you constantly.

Different loved ones may seem to appear during different chapters of your life.

One person may feel especially close when you are dealing with a relationship.

Another may appear when you are making an important decision.

Someone else may suddenly enter your thoughts during a difficult day.

Sometimes the timing itself is the message.

If someone who has passed suddenly comes strongly into your awareness, pause for a moment.

Instead of immediately dismissing it, ask yourself:

Why am I thinking about this person right now?

What was happening just before they came into my mind?

What did this person represent to me?

There may be an intuitive insight waiting there.

────────

What About Your Pet?

Animals can have incredibly strong energetic relationships with us.

Sometimes an animal who was deeply bonded to you may continue to feel connected after their physical life ends.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be the animal you expected.

That was something that surprised me personally.

I once assumed that a particular animal would remain connected to one of my children, and instead I experienced that animal becoming part of my own spirit team.

We don't always know what role another soul may play after leaving its physical form.

────────

Look for Validation Without Forcing It

One of my favorite things about teaching intuitive development in groups is the validation that naturally occurs.

A student may sense a particular family member.

Another person may describe the same presence.

Someone else may receive an image of a specific animal.

Then the person receiving the information recognizes exactly who everyone is describing.

That is why practicing intuitive work with other people can be so helpful.

You begin learning the difference between trying to make something happen and simply receiving information.

You do not have to force intuition.

The more relaxed you become, the easier it can be to recognize what is actually coming through.

────────

Nobody Really Leaves Us

One of the most comforting things I have learned through decades of intuitive and energy work is that death does not necessarily feel like the complete ending we often imagine it to be.

The physical relationship changes.

The way you experience that person or animal changes.

But love doesn't simply disappear.

For me, there is enormous peace in recognizing that someone may no longer be physically sitting beside you and yet still feel very much connected to your life.

Nobody really leaves us. They simply change form.

And when you begin accessing the peaceful connection rather than only the pain of their physical absence, that relationship can become a beautiful source of love, compassion, and intuitive insights.

Want to Develop Your Ability to Sense Your Spirit Team?

Learning to recognize intuitive information takes practice.

In my Psychic Development and energy training, we work with remote intuitive exercises, animal communication, soul communication, Reiki, and other techniques designed to help you learn what intuitive information actually feels like.

The goal isn't to force yourself to see or hear something.

It is to become quiet enough to recognize what may already be there. 🩷
