Quick Answer
When a person or animal we love passes, I believe the relationship does not end. Once they leave the physical body, they become accessible to us in a different way and may become spirit guides, offering support, comfort, and guidance. The difficulty is that intense grief can temporarily make it harder to feel them. As the grief begins to soften, many people start sensing their loved ones again through dreams, memories, feelings, signs, or an unmistakable sense of their presence.
I recently had a student share something truly heartbreaking with me.
A couple of months ago, she suddenly lost one of her cats. There was no warning and no clear explanation.
Then last week, her remaining cat was hit by a car.
At the same time, something remarkable was happening in her life.
She met her soulmate.
She got a new job.
Her life began changing and moving forward in entirely new ways.
I believe her cats helped open the way for her to put more energy into her relationship, her career, and the next chapter of her life.
And now, I believe they are among her spirit guides.
We Have Pre-Planned Death Windows
Another spiritual perspective I teach is that we do not enter an incarnation without pre-planned death windows.
Our souls decide upon certain times when we may leave this life.
You cannot leave unless it is one of your scheduled exits.
This is why some people experience horrific freak accidents and somehow live to tell about them, while other people seem to possess nine lives—repeatedly surviving circumstances that very easily could have created another outcome.
There is much more happening at the soul level than we can always understand from our physical perspective.
Sometimes we simply do not have all of the answers yet.
Where Do Our Loved Ones Go After Death?
From all of the spiritual and intuitive work I have done, I know that once a person or animal passes, they become accessible to us.
Always.
The relationship has changed, but it has not disappeared.
They can become a resource you turn to.
You can ask them questions.
You can ask for support.
You can ask for guidance.
You may feel them around you during important decisions or difficult periods of your life.
Animals can absolutely continue working with us after death as well.
A beloved pet who spent years beside you physically may continue walking beside you spiritually.
Why Can't I Feel My Loved One After They Die?
This is one of the most painful parts of grief.
When we are extremely emotional, we often cannot feel them.
Our grief can temporarily keep us from recognizing their presence.
Think about what happens when someone you love comes close energetically.
You may suddenly “feel and sense” them.
And the instant you recognize them, another enormous wave of grief can come crashing through you.
They see and feel your pain.
Sometimes the connection itself reminds you so strongly of what you lost that your grief becomes louder than your ability to perceive them.
Until some of that grief begins to subside, you may not be able to clearly see, feel, or sense them.
That does not mean they are gone.
They May Begin By Visiting You in Dreams
When you are more ready, they may begin approaching gently.
For many people, this starts in dreams.
You may dream that your loved one is simply there with you.
Your pet may appear healthy, happy, and completely themselves.
You may wake up with a feeling that the dream was somehow different from an ordinary dream.
Later, you may begin noticing other signs.
A familiar feeling.
A memory that suddenly appears out of nowhere.
A sensation that someone is beside you.
A familiar smell.
A song at exactly the right moment.
A little behavior or synchronicity that instantly reminds you of your pet.
Over time, it may become easier to recognize the difference between remembering someone and actually sensing their presence.
Do Not Suppress Your Grief
I want to be very clear about this.
I am NOT telling you to suppress your grief so that you can communicate with someone who has passed.
Grieve.
Cry.
Miss them.
Be angry.
Talk about them.
Feel what you need to feel.
There is nothing spiritually advanced about pretending you are not devastated when you are.
Instead, I want you to know that there can be light at the end of your tunnel of grief.
There may come a time when the pain is no longer so overwhelming that it blocks your ability to recognize them.
And when that happens, you may discover that you can see, feel, or sense them again.
Always.
You Did Not Cause Their Death
Grief has a terrible habit of searching for something to blame.
What if I had noticed something sooner?
What if I had taken them somewhere else?
What if I had made a different decision?
What if I had called?
What if I had stayed home?
What if?
Please remember this:
You did nothing to cause the death of the person or animal you loved.
In fact, you may have prolonged their life.
Your physical care may have prolonged it.
Your emotional support may have prolonged it.
Your spiritual work may have prolonged it.
Medical care may have prolonged it.
Your love may have prolonged it.
Do not negate everything you gave them because you are focusing only on the moment you lost them.
You were part of their life too.
And you may have been one of the reasons their life was as beautiful, safe, supported, or long as it was.
Find the “Shiny” Memory
If you can, think back to a particularly special memory from before they passed.
Often there is a moment that feels unusually “shiny.”
You may not have realized how important it was when it happened.
Perhaps it was the way they looked at you.
A conversation.
A cuddle.
A funny little habit.
An ordinary afternoon together.
A moment in the car.
Your pet sleeping beside you.
Someone laughing.
A look across the room.
Something about that memory feels illuminated now.
Hang on to it.
When your mind wants to repeatedly return to the moment of loss, gently bring yourself back to that shiny memory instead.
You are not pretending the loss did not happen.
You are reminding yourself that their life was bigger than their death.
The love was bigger than the final moment.
And if the situation were reversed, wouldn't you want the person you loved to remember the happiness you shared instead of only replaying the moment you left?
Love Does Not End When the Body Does
Death changes a relationship.
It does not erase it.
Eventually, your loved one may become someone you speak to differently.
Someone you ask for support.
Someone you feel beside you during important moments.
Someone who becomes part of your spiritual team.
And your pet may do exactly the same thing.
Your grief deserves its own time.
Do not rush it.
But do not assume that because you cannot feel them today, you will never feel them again.
They may simply be waiting until connecting with them brings you more comfort than pain.
Continue Developing Your Intuition
If you would like to become more confident recognizing spiritual communication, understanding how you personally receive intuitive information, and learning to tell the difference between imagination, memory, and genuine intuitive connection, I invite you to explore my Psychic Development training and The Mohr Intuitive Collective.
These abilities become easier to recognize when you understand your own psychic language and have a safe place to practice them.
Until then, hold tightly to the love.
Hold onto the shiny memories.
And remember: the relationship may have changed, but love does not end when a body does. 🩷
